Near-Surface Long-Range Order at the Ordinary Transition.

چکیده
We study the spatial dependence of the order parameter near surfaces belonging to the universality class of the ordinary transition. Special attention is paid to the influence of a small surface magnetic field h1 at and above the bulk critical temperature. A detailed scaling analysis (which is confirmed by a perturbative calculation) reveals that h1 may give rise to an anomalous short-distance behavior of the order parameter. Close to the surface the magnetization increases with a power law m ∼ z κ with κ ≡ 1 − ηord ⊥ ≃ 0.23 for the three-dimensional Ising model. These results are closely related to experimental findings where exponents of the ordinary transition were observed in Fe3 Al, while superstructure reflections revealed the existence of long-range order near the surface [X. Mailänder et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 64, 2527 (1990)]. PACS: 75.40.Cx,75.30.Pd,78.70.Ck,68.35.Rh Typeset using REVTEX ∗e-mail: [email protected] †e-mail: [email protected]

The study of a two-dimensional (2-D) system started nearly half a century ago when Peierls and Landau showed the lack of long range translational order in a two-dimensional solid. In 1968, Mermin proved that despite the absence of long range translational order. Two-dimensional solids can still exhibit a different kind of long range bond orientation. During the last decade, fascinating theori...
متن کاملX-Ray Scattering at FeCo(001) Surfaces and the Crossover between Ordinary and Normal Transitions
In a recent experiment by Krimmel et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 3880 (1997)], the critical behavior of FeCo near a (001) surface was studied by x-ray scattering. Here the experimental data are reanalyzed, taking into account recent theoretical results on order-parameter profiles in the crossover regime between ordinary and normal transitions. Excellent agreement between theoretical expectations ...
متن کامل2 F eb 2 00 4 Water in nanopores . II . Liquid - vapour phase transition near hydrophobic surfaces
The liquid-vapour phase transition near a weakly attractive surface is studied by simulations of the coexistence curves of water in hydrophobic pores. There is a pronounced gradual density depletion of the liquid phase near the surface without any trend to the formation of a vapour layer below the bulk critical temperature TC . The temperature dependence of the order parameter in the surface la...
متن کاملUnsteady Heat and Mass Transfer Near the Stagnation-point on a Vertical Permeable Surface: a Comprehensive Report of Dual Solutions
In this paper, the problem of unsteady mixed convection boundary layer flow of a viscous incompressible fluid near the stagnation-point on a vertical permeable plate with both cases of prescribed wall temperature and prescribed wall heat flux is investigated numerically. Here, both assisting and opposing buoyancy forces are considered and studied. The non-linear coupled partial differential equ...
